"I had worked for other people up to the point that I embarked on the SAYES program. I was nervous about the legal, marketing, accounting and other regulatory aspects of running my own business. Suddenly I didn't have an all-knowing employer above me that I
could ask or defer any difficult questions to. The SAYES program offered not only structured workshops on everything from HR to marketing but also offered a network of people who were at the same stage with their businesses and a mentor to focus specifically
on my business. I gained confidence from the program that we were implementing all of the structures that were necessary for our business and saw that other people in the group were grappling with the same issues that I was. The most important benefit of the program was being matched with my mentor who has been a sounding board and has pushed us to undertake the 'big picture' tasks that have shaped how our business runs every day.'
Rob Dean and Dan Mendelson, Burger Theory
Rob and I enrolled in the SAYES program at a critical juncture in our business's life: Burger Theory was beginning to receive an unexpectedly large amount of press, but behind the scenes, our lives were fairly chaotic, to say the least. This was plain on our faces at most of the SAYES events, as we usually arrived covered in grease, smelling of burgers and often a few minutes late. But through the empathetic guidance of the speakers and with the support of Dan Smith and our mentor Andrew Leunig in particular, we were imparted with the confidence (and a plan) to work on our business, instead of simply in it. And that normally cliche phrase actually meant something with the seasoned knowledge these individuals possessed.
To this day, we continue to be in touch with Dan, Andrew and several of the speakers (one of whom is now our accountant). Additionally, our fellow SAYES graduates have been supportive as well and it is a pleasure to run into them or arrange a catch up to discuss our business and theirs. It has been a great experience to be a part of the SAYES community and we look forward to the growth of these networks as our business continues to grow.
