What financial incentives are available to employ an apprentice or trainee?

The Australian Government provides funding to employers who train an Australian apprentice who meets eligibility criteria. The Australian Government also provides assistance to selected apprentices as well, such as tool allowances which in turn benefits you. If you are in the building and construction industry, there are additional significant funding incentives available for employers.

The State Government may provide funding to assist with the cost of training your apprentice or trainee. Apprentices and trainees are exempt from WorkCover levies and you will be able to get an 80% rebate on payroll tax paid for apprentices and trainees under 25 years old. This represents a significant cost savings to you.

The range of diverse apprentices and trainees

You need to develop innovative strategies to attract and retain valued employees to meet the vital labour market needs of your business. Recruiting apprentices and trainees from diverse alternative backgrounds can make good business sense. There are many benefits and special financial incentives and support services available when employing apprentices who have a disability, who are Indigenous, who commence their apprenticeship/traineeship while still at school, apprentices who are aged over 30 years, mature aged people particularly when they are disadvantaged through redundancy or maybe an ‘out of trade’ apprentice or trainee. You can even up-skill an existing worker through an apprenticeship or traineeship.
