The launch of Business SA’s ‘green’ accreditation scheme was held at the Business SA Function Centre on 23 November 2009.

Over 50 members attended the launch and were the first to gain an insight into the structure of the scheme, its potential brand and marketing benefits, and how it will assist businesses of all shapes and sizes to obtain formal recognition in managing their environmental impacts.

Following its launch, interest in the scheme has increased rapidly, with a number of businesses already registering for accreditation.

One of the first to register was Mexican Express, the first organisation to successfully meet the requirements of bronze level accreditation:

Ethan Tan, Operations Manager at Mexican Express said there were many benefits for the company to gain accreditation.

“Going green wasn’t so much because of pressures from customers but steps towards becoming a leaner manufacturer,” said Ethan.

“As Mexican Express is well known for being a customer focused manufacturer, it would just be unwise to not take this opportunity to further value-add.

“We chose to run with the accreditation scheme as it was simple to implement, well designed to suit our needs and as a plus, it propels Mexican Express a step closer to achieving ISO14001.”

Ian Young, Managing Director at Mexican Express, also added that it was the ideal time to implement recognised green practices.

“Rest a sure the only thing you can guarantee with the Emissions Trading Scheme or what ever it will be, is that the input costs of energy, water and waste have just been given the license to sky rocket. And like any other cost, we are trying to shave it off bit by bit,” Ian said.
