All elected Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) are legally entitled to attend training to ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out their Work Health and Safety (WHS) duties.
Newly-elected HSRs should complete this five-day Level 1 training course.
The SafeWork SA approved course will provide an introduction to the role of an HSR and the processes used to identify and resolve workplace health and safety issues. It will give HSRs an understanding of their legal obligations and explain key terms and concepts of the legislation.
Level 1 HSR training provides:
- Information on the causes of work-related injuries, illness and fatalities;
- an understanding of the WHS legislation (the Act, Regulations and Codes of Practice);
- duties of key parties and understanding their respective legal obligations;
- role of HSRs;
- participation in consultation and issue resolution; and
- an understanding of how to represent members in WHS risk management processes undertaken by the PCBU.
The HSR Level 1 training course can be completed as the full five-days in a row, or HSRs can do the training in two parts. Part 1 is a three-day course and Part 2 is two-days.
HSRs are elected for a three-year term and have to attend refresher training for their entire term. In their second year they should undertake a three-day training course and in their third year a two-day course.
Are you eligible for a subsidy? There may be subsidies of up to $100 per employee per day to attend this training. This means this course could attract up to a $500 subsidy. Strict eligibility criteria apply. Find out more.
