The new Environment Protection (Waste to Resources) Policy (EPP) is due to come into effect on 1 September 2010, and will be rolled out in stages over the next three years.

Once implemented, the new EPP will include:

> Paper
> Plastics - No’s 1, 2, 4, 5;
> Glass packaging – bottles and jars;
> Electronic and electrical waste including computers, monitors, televisions and their components;
> Metals – including copper, aluminum, steel or iron

- prohibiting the unlawful disposal or stockpiling of waste, with fines up to $250,000

- requirements that most waste produced in metropolitan Adelaide not be disposed of to landfill unless it has first been subject to resource recovery

- standards required to be met by all waste transporters

The EPA and ZWSA will be working with local government and the waste industry to ensure broader community and industry awareness of landfill bans and obligations under the EPP.

To help your organisation prepare for these changes, our environment and sustainability specialists now provide both fee-based waste management reviews and waste management training.

Our Green Accreditation Scheme can also assist your organisation to take action to improve resource use efficiency and reduce the total proportion of waste it sends to landfill.

If you would like to find out more about how our environmental specialists can help your organisation, contact our Customer Service Centre on 08 8300 0103.
