Business SA, the State’s peak Chamber of Commerce and Industry can trace its origins back to 1839, three years after the foundation of the State of South Australia.
We have lobbied on behalf of our members, both State and Federal Governments without fear or favour, to ensure that the voice of business in South Australia is heard.
It began with the formation of the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce.
Then in 1869, the South Australian Chamber of Manufactures was formed as a lobby and support group for the State's manufacturers.
This was followed in 1889 by the formation of the South Australian Employers' Federation.
In 1972 the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce and the South Australian Chamber of Manufactures merged to form the Chamber of Commerce and Industry SA Inc.
On 1 November 1993, there was the merger of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the South Australian Employers' Federation to form the South Australian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.
This rationalisation was completed with the launch on 29 May 2000 of Business SA, with a new name and a new image for the State's leading business and employer group.
We recently celebrated our 175th anniversary with a black tie gala dinner hosted by David Koch and Jane Doyle, at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
The leaders of State and Federal Governments as well as hundreds of SA business leaders were in attendance.
The venue was at full capacity with almost 900 people.
The event celebrated the efforts of our many members who, through their businesses, have made a significant contribution to our State over the past 175 years.
The night highlighted all things South Australian and showcased Business SA members who have been a part of our 175 year history.
Guests went on the journeys that some iconic South Australian businesses have taken over the past 175 years as we celebrated all things, large and small, that make South Australia what it is today.
At the dinner a number of iconic SA businesses were inducted into our hall of fame and we recognised a number of individuals who are Champions of South Australian Industry.
Without these iconic Businesses and Industry Champions, South Australia would not be what it is today.
Business SA’s diverse membership base includes all industry sectors across the State.
We have a long and proud history of 175 years of advocacy and lobbying, and of assisting and supporting thousands of businesses of all sizes, to make it easier for business to do business in SA.
Here’s to the next 175 years!
