Hot Topics – a new initiative

As the voice of business in South Australia, Business SA seeks to represent your views in our advocacy role. In order to do this, we need greater input from you, our members, in developing policies on key issues that may affect your business. So we encourage you to take part in our new monthly internet survey, Hot Topics. It only takes a minute or two to complete and you can log in via our website.

The first Hot Topics are Shop Trading Hours and Environmental Legislation and Regulations. In future surveys, we anticipate asking members about issues such as business costs and OH&S. There is also an opportunity to tell us your Hot Topics and this will inform future surveys as well. So please let us know your thoughts.

Upcoming Business SA networking event

The next event in the popular Business SA networking series will be held on Tuesday 26 October at the University of Adelaide from 5.30 – 7.30pm.

The event will be held in the new Innova 21 Building which was opened in mid 2010 – now the largest building in the University’s extensive development program. The evening will again feature fine wines and canapés with fantastic networking opportunities and door prizes again on offer.

State Wage Case

On 16 September 2010, the South Australian Industrial Relations Commission delivered its decision regarding the State Wage Case 2010. However, given that State industrial relations system is limited to the South Australian public sector, local government and government business enterprises, the State Wage Case decision does not apply to private sector businesses.

For the South Australian public sector, local government and government business enterprises, the decision includes:

- an increase of 3.5 per cent to award wages and
- a minimum wage for award and agreement-free employees of $580.30 per week.

Fair Work Booklet

To assist your business in understanding the new award system and minimum conditions of employment, Business SA has a comprehensive guide, the Fair Work Booklet, which explains each NES entitlement and its application to all employees, as well as applying the new Modern Awards and associated transitional provisions. National Skills Survey

Business SA is a member of the Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (ACCI). ACCI is conducting  the 2010 National Workplace Skills Survey which collects information about the level of investment by Australian businesses in training their staff as well as information about the level of skills within the current workforce,  skill shortages, professional development of teachers, and the quality of educational providers.

This information will be used by ACCI to form a statistical evidence base to lobby government in the development of effective workforce development policies.  The results will be made broadly available to employers,  governments, registered training organisations and the community.

The survey is designed for all employers, in all industries regardless of business size or turnover. We encourage you to complete this online survey, which should take no longer than 20 minutes, by COB Friday 26 November 2010. Please note that your responses are anonymous, and will not be used for any purpose other than that outlined above.

CEDA Water Research Series

Getting the best outcome from water for the environment – 11 November 2010

Following the release of the Murray Darling Basin Authority's guide to the proposed basin plan last week, CEDA is delighted to invite guests to this critical discussion on water policy, featuring key thought-leaders from around the globe.

Speakers include Professor Mike Young from The University of Adelaide, Professor John Briscoe from Harvard University, USA, Dr Michael Porter, CEDA Research Director and Jennifer Westacott, Sustainability, Climate Change & Water, KPMG.

Business SA member Coopers Brewery has locked down a national sponsorship deal with the elite Paspaley Polo in the City event. Adelaide’s leg of the series will be held at Nanto Womma Park on Saturday 27 November and is an opportunity to witness some of Australia’s best professional polo talent.
