Louise Marsh – General Manager, Corporate Conversation
Louise Marsh is General Manager of leading South Australian corporate communication and public relations firm, Corporate Conversation.
Can you tell us about your career and how it led to General Manager at Corporate Conversation?
I started my career with Corporate Conversation as a university student, answering the phones as a part-time receptionist. Today I am General Manager, responsible for a team of public relations professionals and the corporate communication activities of many of South Australia’s leading businesses. I have always felt very fortunate to find a career that I love. From the early days of my career I took the opportunity to share this good fortune by providing encouragement and support to the newer members of our team. This was my introduction to the responsibilities associated with a leadership role and I discovered that I enjoyed helping people to develop their skills and progress their careers.Over the past 11 years I have held the roles of Consultant and Senior Consultant and was appointed General Manager in February 2010.
Can you tell us about Corporate Conversation?
Corporate Conversation is a leading South Australian corporate communication and public relations firm. We assist South Australian businesses to achieve the recognition they deserve. We are focused on achieving great results for great clients. We help them to share their success stories and undertake communication activities that are aligned with their growth plans. This includes communication strategy, media liaison, media training, strategic alliances, speech writing, the preparation of written material such as customer letters and annual reports, and assistance with award submissions.
Briefly, what does your role involve?
I work closely with Corporate Conversation Managing Director Chris Doudle to set the strategic direction for the firm. I provide leadership to my team, giving them encouragement and support to achieve their best and deliver great results for our clients. I also work closely with our clients to plan and implement their corporate communication activities.
What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
My team and our clients. I have an exceptional team. Working with them to achieve great results for our clients is good fun and rewarding. I am also fortunate to work with some of South Australia’s most successful businesses. The opportunity to work alongside these business leaders and see them in action is very inspiring.
What have been the highlights of your career to date?
Early on in my career I was given the responsibility to manage communication activity for one of Corporate Conversation’s largest clients at the time. Soon after, my team nominated me for the Public Relations Institute of Australia’s Young Practitioner Award and I received state and national commendations. By far the biggest highlight of my career has been my appointment to General Manager and the enthusiastic response to this from my team. The ongoing encouragement and support from the people I work with means a lot to me. Work achievements aside, another highlight was the opportunity to jump out of a plane and go tandem skydiving as part of Corporate Conversation’s staff rewards program.
What does leadership mean to you?
The opportunity to lead a team of professionals is a great responsibility and a real privilege. For me, leadership is about providing inspiration, encouragement and support to my team so they can achieve their best and deliver great results for our clients. I care about the personal and career aspirations of my team and invest time and energy into helping them achieve those goals. Leadership requires endless reserves of enthusiasm and the courage not to shy away from difficult discussions. It can be challenging at times, but it’s also good fun.
What are your views on business in South Australia?
I am constantly impressed by the many businesses I come across through my work which are achieving great things on a local, national and international scale. South Australia is full of business success stories. They come in all shapes and sizes across a range of industries. Some are big and some are small, some are well known while others are hidden gems and I enjoy helping them to share their success stories and achieve the recognition they deserve.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In addition to spending time with my husband John, family and friends, I love to read. I recently started a blog – www.thereadingexperiment.com – where I post book reviews and share recommendations for books I have read and enjoyed which other people might enjoy too.
