All South Australian export businesses can apply across 12 categories, ranging from agribusiness and minerals and energy, through to education, manufacturing, information and communication technology and more.

Winners of the State awards automatically qualify as finalists in the 49th Australian Export Awards hosted by Austrade and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Award winners will be announced at a special awards luncheon on 19 October 2011 at the National Wine Centre of Australia.

Gas price increases 10 per centCoins image
South Australia’s energy market regulator – the Essential Services Commission of South Australia – released its final price determination on the gas contract price for the next three years. Gas prices for small business customers will rise by 10 per cent in 2011-12 and by the rate of the CPI in both 2012-13 and 2013-14.

More information on the price determination can be accessed at www.escosa.sa.gov.au. The website also contains a calculator for small businesses to assess their electricity and gas bills and what different offers are available from retailers.

The Australian Taxation Office has released various rates and thresholds effective from 1 July 2011. Those that have been updated include:
­- Reasonable Allowances Determination has been released
- The Employment Termination Payment Low Rate Cap Amount has increased to $165,000 from $160,000
­- The tax free limit for bona fide redundancy payments is now $8,435 and $4,218 for each year of completed service
­- The Depreciation Cost Limit and Luxury Car Tax Threshold are both unchanged at $57,466
­- The Fuel Efficient Car Limit is also unchanged at $75,375
­- The cents per kilometre rates for 2010/2011 are again unchanged
­- Taxation Ruling, TR 2011/2, has been released detailing effective life estimates
- The maximum contribution base for superannuation guarantee purposes is $43,820 per quarter or $175,280 per year
- The benchmark interest rate for the 2012 fringe benefits tax year has increased to 7.80 per cent
- The car parking threshold for the 2012 fringe benefits tax year has increased to $7.71
­-  Reasonable weekly food component amounts have been announced for the 2012 fringe benefits tax year.

Where such rates and thresholds are relevant, businesses, and in particular their applicable staff, should familiarise themselves with the changes and update records and processes where required.

Southern Cross Care CEO announces retirement
Michael Bendyk BBS, MHSM who has held the position of Chief Executive Officer for Southern Cross Care (SA & NT) Inc. for fourteen years, has announced his retirement from the position in early November 2011.

The growth of the major not for profit organisation has been spectacular since Michael joined in 1997. During this time new retirement village accommodation, supported residential care facilities and community and home based services have been added to the organisations extensive portfolio across all of South Australia.

Mr Brendan Bowler AM, the Chairman of the Board of Southern Cross Care, commented “Michael brought a level of expertise and commitment to the organisation which has resulted in a controlled expansion to meet the demand and expectation of an ageing population".

Coopers releases 2011 Extra Strong Vintage Ale
Coopers Brewery has released its 2011 Extra Strong Vintage Ale. Launched recently at a special event at the Coopers Alehouse in Adelaide, this limited release beer is the 11th vintage in the celebrated series.

Coopers’ Managing Director and Chief Brewer, Dr Tim Cooper, described the 2011 Vintage Ale as a “rich and sensuous” brew that pampered the senses.

“As the cornerstone for this year’s brew, we have used choice premium South Australian barley grown in the pristine region of the Clare Valley,” he said.
