Rates decision to hurt local economy
Business SA responded to this week’s decision by the Reserve Bank Board to maintain official interest rates at 4.25 per cent.
Business SA Chief Executive Officer, Peter Vaughan, said that further action on interest rates is required by the Reserve Bank.
“We believe there was a strong case to cut interest rates and this decision by the Reserve Bank will maintain the pressure on businesses and consumers throughout the local economy,” Mr Vaughan said.
“The two interest rate cuts before Christmas provided some relief, however it has been evident that further action is required to assist the many industry sectors that remain under strain.
“Recent economic data, including inflation, building approvals and subdued retail trade, have indicated the need for a reduction in interest rates.”

Transitional provisions for the Social Community Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 – Are you ready?
Transitional provisions in the Social Community Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 are due to commence from 1 February 2012.
While employers in other industries have grappled with transitional provisions over the last 18 months, those in the Social and Community Services sector have been somewhat shielded from the full extent of Modern Award complexity due to the delayed introduction of transitional provisions in this Award.
The transitional provisions allow for changes in rates of pay, penalties and loadings to be phased in over a period of time, and Business SA has a wealth of experience in assisting employers with the complex calculations involved. We can help you to get ready for 1 February 2012 by providing:
- a detailed understanding of the process and implications of transitional provisions;
- the calculated rates of pay, penalties and loadings applicable from 1 February 2012;
- additional options which will accommodate the next phase of transitional provisions effective from 1 July 2012;
- an understanding of the impact on your staff as well as ways to manage that impact;
- assistance in communicating the changes to your staff; and
- ongoing support as required through the implementation of transitional provisions.
We can also work with you to develop rosters and workplace practices which are compliant with the Modern Award, taking into account the needs of your service and the provisions of the Modern Award.
In short, our consultants can provide as little or as much assistance to you as you prepare for 1 February 2012. For more information on how the Business SA Consulting team can assist, please call 8300 0103.
