An article released by Safework recently advised of a recent incident where a farm worker received serious burns when using a flammable liquid to assist in the burning-off of grape vine prunings.
SafeWork SA reminded businesses and workers to ensure flammable liquids are not being used to ignite fires in the workplace and to seek a safer alternative in the first instance.
As we lead into the summer season it is imperative that we are evaluating all risks when considering burning-off but also how we are using any forms of hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
With the adoption of Revision 7 of the of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) in January, businesses should now understand how these apply within their workplace and trained workers of the dangers of hazardous chemicals and in particular those using flammable liquids, that under no circumstances should it be thrown onto a heat source, such as a naked flame or burning ember.
It is recommend that as we move into summer that we review our Hazardous Chemicals and ensure correct storage, labelling and use by all relevant staff.
