STATE: Skilling South Australia – Government funding

Skilling South Australia is an initiative of the South Australian Government which is intended to help more people get skills and qualifications to build lasting careers and meet the workforce needs of industry now and into the future. The South Australia Government is investing $13.7 million into the skills system to deliver solutions to skills shortages and open new opportunities to connect South Australians to training.

Through our partnership with the Institute of Training & Further Education (“iTFE”), they are an approved Skilling South Australia supplier connecting the Government’s investment with participants in vocational education and training. Each subsidised qualification requires a co-contribution fee by the participant towards the remaining cost of the qualification before the commencement of training.

Eligibility requirements:

Participants may be eligible for subsidised training if they live or work in South Australia and:

• an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or

• a permanent Australian resident, or

FEDERAL: Australian Government Tax Deductions

The Australian Government is supporting small businesses to upskill their employees as part of their 2022 Skills and Training Boost scheme.

Small businesses with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $50 million are able to access a bonus 20% tax deduction for the cost of external training courses delivered to their employees by providers registered in Australia until June 2024.

This means that for every $100 you spend on training, you will receive a $120 tax deduction.

There is no limit to how much you can spend on training, but certain rules apply:

  • The course must be run by an external education provider
  • The training provider needs to be registered in Australia
  • In-house and on-the-job training is not eligible, nor is money spent training people who are not employees of the business
  • The courses can be provided in person (only in Australia) or online
  • This boost will apply to eligible expenditures incurred until 30 June 2024.

While the legislation, finally tabled in the House of Representatives in November, has yet to be passed, there is every indication that it will be, and the tax deduction will be able to be claimed.

To claim the additional 20% deduction for eligible external training courses provided by registered providers in Australia, you can delay lodging your 2023 tax return until the law is enacted. Alternatively, you can lodge your return and claim your ordinary deduction for the technology investment or skills and training expenditure. Then, when the law is enacted, you amend your return to claim the 20% bonus deduction.
